/ The Girl(s) of the Golden West

Having addressed “Tosca” and “Manon Lescaut” Lulu Obermayer now dedicates herself to the third of Puccini’s operas, “La Fanciulla del West”, set during the Gold Rush in California of 1849/50.
Opera meets Western film: “The Girl(s) of the Golden West” breaks with typical representations of gender in both genres.
Instead of a lonesome cowboy, Minnie, who is a typical protagonist in neither a western nor an opera, is explored for her feminist potential.
In her solo performance Lulu Obermayer inscribes herself into plot, libretto and score.

Lulu Obermayer,(*1989 in Munich) trained as an actress at the ‘Lee Strasberg Institute’ and ‘Stella Adler Studio’ in New York. In February 2017 she graduated from the MA program ‘Solo Dance and Authorship’ at ‘Inter-University Center for Dance in Berlin’ (‘University of the Arts’ and the ‘Hochschule für Schauspielkunst “Ernst Busch”’) From 2010 to 2014 she studied ‘BA(hons) Contemporary Performance Practice’ at the ‘Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’ and Dramaturgy at  the University of Music and Theatre’. In her choreographies she deals with representations of femininity and aloneness on stage. She isolates female protagonists of the dramatic canon from the their narrative in order to grant them a new agency and ontological inquiry. Thereby the emotional and theatrical apparatus overlap using elements of opera, choreography and performance. Obermayer develops Performances where one moment is stretched into eternity.

“Solo Change star Obermayer is talent to watch” Mary Brennan, Herald Scotland
