Kathrin Knöpfle

Performer, educator, choreograph and visual artist

She completed her initial training as a wood sculptor from 2007 to 2010 at the Berufsfachschule für das Holzbildhauerhandwerk in Munich. This was followed by a dance and performance education at TIP – School for Dance, Improvisation and Performance in Freiburg. Since 2013, she has been working as a freelancer in the independent dance working with artists such as: Dali Touiti, Allora & Calzadilla, Alexandra Pirici, Jérôme Bel, Doris Uhlich, and others. For over ten years, she was a permanent member of the Swiss dance company led by Anja Gysin.

Thanks to artist grants from the City of Munich and DIS-TANZ-SOLO, she has focused more intensively on her own artistic projects since 2022. Her research project “MOTHER TONGUE” explores themes of migration, family imprinting, and transgenerational trauma, forming a biographical and artistic engagement with her personal history. Currently, she is the main protagonist and co-director of the long-term documentary film “TRACING MOTHER LINES”, supported by the FFF Bayern (Bavarian Film and Television Fund). In her studio “Karli 17” in Munich-Moosach, she continues her interdisciplinary research at the intersection of dance, spatial installation, and sculpture.
